MUSCAT: The Sultan Qaboos Integrated Centre for Cancer Treatment and Research has confirmed that 35 new cases of esophageal cancer are diagnosed in the Sultanate annually, according to estimates by the World Health Organisation.

The surgical team at SQCCCRC has managed to remove an esophageal tumor using thoracoscopy and laparoscopy for a 61-year-old woman diagnosed with stage 3 cancer.

Esophageal cancer is cancer that occurs in the esophagus which is a long, hollow tube that
runs from the throat to the stomach. This type of cancer can occur anywhere along the esophagus. Men are more likely to develop esophageal cancer than women.

Some risk factors for esophageal cancer can’t be avoided, such as genetics or age. However, there are many lifestyle changes that can help you reduce your risk such as avoid alcohol and smoking. Following a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercises and treating long-standing gastroesophageal reflux are some of the way to stay ahead of this illness.

The symptoms of this kind of cancer include difficulty in swallowing, indigestion or heartburn, persistent cough and hoarseness, vomiting and weight loss.
