MUSCAT: A Head of the Inheritance Department of the judicial system was convicted of embezzling funds estimated at OMR 1.2 million meant for orphans and minors.
In a report issued by the State’s Financial and Administrative Audit Institution (SAI) said the government employee has been sentenced to five years imprisonment on charges of fraud and embezzlement.
According to the report, he misused his position by receiving cash as a representative for the orphaned minors. “Instead of depositing the collected amounts in the court’s account, he spent it for his personal gain,” the report stated.

The employee was also convicted for money laundering charges and has been sentenced to five more years of imprisonment and a fine of OMR 50,000. “He denied working in any positions in the government sector,” the report added.
Meanwhile, SAI has dealt with 207 corruption cases and managed to recover OMR 580 million during the ninth five-year plan and asserted the government’s “zero tolerance” policy for graft.
The authority also revealed that it has set up the ‘Anti-Corruption Commission’ to detect financial and administrative violations. SAI has already activated the commission in most government units and also opened a number of branches in most governorates based on the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
