MUSCAT : Muscat Governorate has begun a comprehensive survey of government and private buildings and public facilities to assess their compliance with approved accessibility standards for persons with disabilities.

The Muscat Governorate team responsible for the initiative held its first meeting on Tuesday at the Ministry of Social Development, setting out the mechanism and organisational framework for carrying out the field survey and coordinating with relevant authorities.

The assessment will examine the extent to which targeted buildings and facilities meet accessibility requirements, with a focus on ensuring that persons with disabilities can access and use services and facilities easily and independently.

Dr Salim bin Saif Al Shuili, head of the team, said the initiative supports efforts to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities and implement Oman’s Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, issued under Royal Decree No. 92/2025.

The team comprises representatives from several relevant authorities and will prepare a fieldwork plan identifying priority buildings, sectors and timelines for the survey.

It will also compile a comprehensive list of targeted properties across Muscat Governorate and classify them by sector, including government buildings, public facilities and private premises. Each targeted property will then be surveyed and assessed in accordance with the approved methodology and accessibility standards.

The initiative is aimed at identifying and addressing accessibility barriers across Muscat Governorate and creating a more inclusive environment in which persons with disabilities can access public and private facilities and the services they provide.
