MUSCAT: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has directed authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the powers and roles of Oman’s Municipal Councils ahead of elections for their fourth term scheduled for December 2026.
The directive came during a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by His Majesty at Al Hosn Palace in Salalah on Tuesday.
The review will examine the powers granted to Municipal Councils, the roles they perform and the integration of their work with governorates, as Oman prepares for the next four-year council term. Under Oman’s Municipal Councils Law, a council term runs for four years.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of broad participation by different segments of society in the upcoming elections and encouraged voters to make informed choices.
He highlighted the importance of bringing individuals with expertise and capabilities into the Municipal Councils to strengthen their work during the next phase.
