MUSCAT : The sector is witnessing strong momentum as part of national efforts to enhance food security and diversify income sources in line with blue economy objectives.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, total investments in existing aquaculture projects reached approximately RO 349 million by the end of 2025, indicating rising investor confidence. Additional agreements worth over RO 50 million have also been signed, expected to add more than 15,000 tonnes of annual production capacity, particularly in shrimp and marine fish farming.

Aquaculture production rose steadily to around 9,240 tonnes by the end of 2025, including 7,970 tonnes from commercial farming and 605 tonnes from integrated farming, highlighting improved efficiency and an expanding operational base.

Abdul Aziz bin Saeed Al Marzouqi, Director General of Fisheries Resources Development, said the sector is undergoing a qualitative transformation through increased investment and enhanced productivity, strengthening its contribution to the national economy.

He told the Oman News Agency that production is becoming more diversified, covering shrimp, marine fish, oysters, abalone, seaweed, and algae, as part of efforts to build an integrated aquaculture system.
He added that integrated aquaculture models — combining fish farming with agricultural or aquatic systems — are improving resource efficiency.

Oman aims to increase aquaculture production to about 252,000 tonnes by 2030 under its expansion and sustainability plans.
