Washington: Heavy rain and damaging winds swept across parts of the northeastern United States as a powerful nor’easter disrupted air travel, knocked out electricity and raised fears of coastal flooding.
The storm affected major cities including New York, Boston and Philadelphia, with hundreds of flights cancelled as difficult weather conditions disrupted transport across the region.
More than 60,000 customers were left without electricity as strong winds battered several areas, with authorities warning of the possibility of falling trees and downed power lines.

Authorities in New York urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as strong winds and heavy rainfall continued to affect the city and surrounding areas.
The severe weather also forced organisers to cancel several cultural and musical events, including festivals scheduled in New York, Maryland and Boston.
