MUSCAT – The governorate is characterised by a unique blend of pristine beaches, desert expanses, and protected natural reserves, in addition to rich cultural and heritage assets that have increasingly attracted visitors and tourism investors in recent years.
Over the past few years, the governorate has recorded notable growth in the accommodation sector, which has become a key driver in supporting tourism activity and enhancing visitor experience, in line with sustainable tourism development strategies pursued by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.
The ministry confirmed that Al Wusta Governorate has witnessed steady growth in licensed accommodation establishments, which now stand at 22 facilities offering a total of 718 rooms. The Heritage and Tourism Department in the governorate continues to update sector data and regulate operations to improve service quality and support tourism growth.
In addition, the number of licensed small and medium enterprises operating accommodation facilities in the governorate has reached 15, including 13 enterprises holding the “Riyada” card and two formally registered small and medium enterprises.
Mahmoud bin Saeed Al Hakmani, Head of the Tourism Development Department at the Heritage and Tourism Directorate in Al Wusta Governorate, said accommodation facilities play a vital role in supporting the tourism sector by offering diverse options that cater to visitors interested in relaxation, adventure, and eco-tourism experiences.
He added in a statement to the Oman News Agency that the department continues to monitor accommodation facilities through field inspections to ensure compliance with approved standards, while also raising investor awareness about service quality, facilitating licensing procedures, and encouraging greater participation from small and medium enterprises in the tourism sector.
Al Hakmani noted that Al Wusta is distinguished by a range of natural attractions, including beaches, environmental reserves, open desert landscapes, and a tranquil environment. He said the diversity of tourism activities—such as camping, marine trips, eco-tourism, and adventure tourism—has strengthened the governorate’s appeal.
He also pointed to several new accommodation projects currently under study and regulatory review, as part of efforts to expand tourism infrastructure and accommodate growing visitor numbers.
He further highlighted the role of youth and community initiatives in promoting the governorate’s tourism assets in recent years. These initiatives, he said, have used social media platforms as well as organised environmental, tourism, and volunteer activities to showcase desert and marine destinations while promoting environmental awareness and heritage preservation.
