MUSCAT – The project is expected to enhance traffic flow and improve access to key tourist attractions, while strengthening logistical connectivity across Dhofar Governorate.
His Excellency Engineer Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamkhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Transport, said the Al Mughsail Road and Bridge project is one of the ministry’s vital infrastructure projects due to its strategic importance to the governorate’s road network.
He noted that the ministry has paid special attention to ensuring the project combines engineering excellence with aesthetic features that complement the surrounding tourist landmarks, including Al Marneef Cave and the natural blowholes at Mughsail Beach.

His Excellency explained that the project includes the construction of a 500-metre concrete bridge supported by 20 columns and two side abutments, each standing 12 metres high. The project also features decorative elements and an underground tunnel to facilitate traffic movement and access to nearby tourist destinations, including the Mughsail waterfront, Al Marneef Cave and the natural fountains.

In addition, the project includes side parking areas and a pedestrian walkway equipped with lighting, ranging in width from two to seven metres. The road is also being fitted with comprehensive traffic safety features, including concrete and metal barriers, directional signage and road markings in accordance with approved national road design standards.

His Excellency said the project will facilitate access to tourist sites, improve traffic movement and enhance the visitor experience, particularly during the Khareef Dhofar season, while supporting tourism, economic and logistics activities in the governorate.

Meanwhile, His Excellency Engineer Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamkhi said a number of ongoing projects in Dhofar Governorate and across Oman have begun implementing innovative technologies in line with national objectives related to environmental sustainability, green mobility and digital transformation.

He explained that these initiatives include asphalt recycling technologies aimed at reducing waste and minimising the environmental impact of road construction activities, as well as the installation of solar panels in project facilities to reduce carbon emissions and lower operating costs.

The Undersecretary added that the ministry is also expanding the use of remote-controlled equipment in road paving works, including smart asphalt paving technology currently being deployed in the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road Dualisation Project (Part Four) in Dhofar Governorate.

Advanced dust-control technologies are also being used to minimise the environmental impact of construction activities, improve implementation efficiency and enhance safety at project sites.
His Excellency said the adoption of these technologies reflects the ministry’s commitment to developing Oman’s transport and road infrastructure in line with international best practices and sustainable development goals.
