MUSCAT – The initiative is being led by the National Centre for Measurement and Calibration at the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion using the high-precision FG-X instrument in accordance with approved international standards.
The programme seeks to create an accurate regional network for absolute gravity measurements and link it to the International System of Units, officials said.
The project includes workshops and specialised lectures covering the importance of gravity values and their impact on measurements and calibration, methods for calculating gravity using the FG-X device, uncertainty factors affecting calculations, and the role of absolute gravity reference points in geological surveying.
The sessions will also focus on analysing terrestrial gravity measurement results to support technical knowledge transfer and enhance expertise exchange among GCC member states.
Ahlam bint Masoud Al Marhoubi, Head of the National Metrology Laboratory at the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology, said the initiative reflects GCC efforts to strengthen national infrastructure for reference measurements and improve laboratory precision.
“Establishing a Gulf network in the field of absolute gravity measurements comes within the efforts of the GCC countries to strengthen the national infrastructure for reference measurements, increase the accuracy of laboratory measurements, and reduce uncertainty in physical quantities related to the value of gravity, including weight, pressure, torque, and viscosity,” she said.
She added that the project would support national laboratories and advance their technical capabilities.
Officials described the initiative as a strategic step toward unifying standard references at the Gulf level and enhancing technical integration among GCC countries in measurement, calibration and advanced metrology fields.
The project is also expected to improve the efficiency of national quality infrastructure systems and strengthen the Gulf region’s position within the international measurement framework.
A specialised technical team from the National Center for Measurement and Calibration in Saudi Arabia is participating in the programme as the implementing partner in cooperation with Oman’s National Centre for Measurement and Calibration.
