MUSCAT : Stretching from Al Khuwair in the heart of the capital to Al Serain nestled in the mountains, Ras Al Shajar along the coast, and extending to the pristine Daymaniyat Islands, these natural spaces collectively embody a vision of a sustainable, vibrant, and environmentally resilient Muscat.
At the centre of this network is Al Khuwair Nature Reserve, a key ecological site located within Muscat’s urban landscape. Established in 2004 and covering 29.6 hectares, the reserve serves as a green oasis amid the city, blending environmental preservation with urban development.

The reserve was primarily created to protect Acacia tortilis trees, a species that plays a crucial role in enhancing air quality, improving the city’s visual appeal, and supporting broader environmental sustainability goals.
Ecologically, Al Khuwair Nature Reserve holds significant biological value. The acacia trees sustain a diverse ecosystem, providing habitat for numerous insects, which in turn attract a wide variety of bird species throughout the year, reinforcing the site’s importance as an urban biodiversity hotspot.
