MUSCAT : A specialised medical team from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Khoula Hospital, in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos Hospital and Nizwa Hospital, performed eight high-quality shoulder surgeries as part of a field medical visits programme. The initiative aims to transfer expertise, expand access to specialised services, and deliver precise medical care across various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
The programme reflects ongoing national efforts to strengthen integration in healthcare delivery and promote decentralisation by making advanced medical specialties more accessible beyond the capital.
At Nizwa Hospital, the team carried out several complex procedures, including the first two surgeries to replace the inverted shoulder joint. This milestone is expected to enhance the hospital’s capability to provide advanced shoulder care locally, reducing the need for patient referrals to central hospitals.

The surgeries were conducted under the supervision of a highly skilled team from Khoula Hospital, utilising the latest technologies in shoulder surgery. The procedures addressed a range of medical conditions requiring precise intervention, achieving positive outcomes and significantly reducing the need for patients to travel for treatment.
Dr Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Mundhiri, Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Khoula Hospital, stated that the collaboration represents a strong model of integration among healthcare institutions in Oman. He noted that such initiatives not only improve the efficiency of medical personnel through hands-on training and knowledge exchange but also enhance the overall quality of healthcare services delivered to communities.
He further emphasised that introducing advanced procedures, such as shoulder joint replacement surgeries, in regional hospitals marks a key step towards localising specialised services and ensuring the sustainability of healthcare delivery.
