MUSCAT : The campaign will begin on Sunday, May 3, and continue until May 7, with the participation of relevant government institutions and private sector companies in Oman.
Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Salim Al-Falahi, Director General of Traffic at the Royal Oman Police, explained to the Oman News Agency that this year’s theme carries an awareness message focused on protecting pedestrians and reducing run-over accidents. It promotes a culture of traffic safety, including the proper use of pedestrian crossings and adherence to traffic signals, particularly in crowded areas and near schools and markets.

He said the Traffic Week represents one of the most important awareness events aimed at enhancing road safety, raising traffic awareness, and reducing accidents. It also seeks to educate students and promote social responsibility through partnerships between government entities, the private sector, and individuals.
Activities will include traffic exhibitions in shopping centres and other locations across all governorates, as well as lectures and educational programmes in schools, universities, and public and private institutions. Media engagements and a consultative seminar on pedestrian safety will also be held.
Al-Falahi noted that traffic safety indicators in Oman have improved in recent years, attributing this to efforts by the General Directorate of Traffic at both supervisory and enforcement levels.
He added that modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, have contributed to a qualitative shift in monitoring violations and reducing accidents. Awareness campaigns, supported by traffic safety institutes, also play a key role in promoting safe driving practices, including the use of virtual reality to simulate risky behaviours.
He highlighted the role of parents and educational institutions in spreading traffic awareness, particularly in teaching safe pedestrian practices, bicycle use, and proper behaviour when boarding and disembarking from buses.
The General Directorate of Traffic, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, has also worked to strengthen awareness among students through initiatives such as the ‘Friends of the Road’ programme and digital educational content.
Al-Falahi stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, adding that compliance with traffic laws reflects societal awareness and contributes to safer roads for all.
