New York: The Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, organized a key side event titled “Progress and Prospects for the Conference on the Establishment of a Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East.” The event took place on the sidelines of the eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from April 27 to May 22.
Speaking at the event, His Excellency Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and President of the Seventh Session of the Conference, highlighted that Oman’s leadership reflects growing international confidence in its balanced and constructive diplomatic approach. He emphasized that the conference serves as a crucial platform for building a collective framework based on gradual progress and consensus in addressing the elimination of weapons of mass destruction in the region.
His Excellency Al Kathiri noted that ongoing efforts aim to foster a more stable and secure regional environment by strengthening trust and encouraging dialogue among Middle Eastern nations. These initiatives, he said, are paving the way for long-term arrangements that support both regional stability and sustainable development.

The event saw strong participation from senior international officials and representatives from various countries and organizations. Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, commended Oman’s leadership, particularly its role during the seventh session of the conference. She praised the country’s efforts to promote transparency and broaden international engagement.
Nakamitsu described the conference as a vital platform for multilateral dialogue, enabling countries in the region to engage in constructive discussions despite ongoing challenges. She added that the progress achieved so far reflects increasing commitment among participating nations, noting that establishing such a zone remains a strategic objective that would enhance regional security and strengthen the global non-proliferation framework.
