MUSCAT – Implemented by the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources using helicopters, the three-day campaign comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to protect palm trees and limit the spread of this agricultural pest.
The campaign targets several villages and areas across the wilayats of A’Rustaq, Al Awabi, Nakhal, and Wadi Al Maawil, with a specific focus on locations experiencing severe infestations. The total area targeted for pest control operations is estimated at approximately 1,800 acres.
The palm dubas bug is considered one of the most prominent pests affecting palm trees in cultivation areas. It becomes active during two periods of the year, with the current iteration known as the spring generation, extending from March to May.
This is considered one of the most dangerous stages as it coincides with the periods of flowering, fruit setting, and growth. Consequently, it leads to direct damages, including the weakening of the trees, a decline in productivity, smaller fruit sizes, and a reduction in marketable quality.
Furthermore, the insect causes indirect damage through honeydew secretions, which facilitate the spread of fungal diseases and negatively impact the photosynthesis process. It also hinders the execution of various agricultural operations, such as pollination and fruit harvesting.
The Directorate emphasizes the critical importance of adhering to the safety guidelines accompanying the spraying operations. This includes evacuating the spraying sites of residents, animals, and beehives, as well as strictly complying with the approved recommendations for pesticide use to ensure optimal results and minimize any side effects.
This campaign is part of the integrated pest management programs implemented by the competent authorities to limit the spread of the palm dubas bug and to preserve the sustainability and productivity of this vital agricultural resource in the governorate.
