MUSCAT – The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Jamal Ahmed Al Abri, Chairman of the Committee, with the participation of its members.
During the session, the Committee met with Abdullah Mohammed Al Abri, an academic and specialist supervisor in English language teaching, to discuss his proposal regarding the challenges faced by graduates of education colleges majoring in English – particularly in passing the IELTS proficiency test.
He proposed preparing and training these graduates through enrolment at specialised institute for professional development, highlighting that such a measure would help reduce reliance on expatriate teachers in boys’ schools and replace them with qualified Omani educators.
Committee members stressed the importance of evaluating the feasibility of such proposals to address employment-related challenges in the education sector, and to work with the relevant authorities in identifying practical solutions.
The Committee also met with a group of students who expressed concerns about new admission requirements for education majors at one of the higher education institutions in Oman. They noted that the changes could impact their ability to continue their academic pursuits.
In addition, the Committee reviewed a letter submitted by a group of academics from vocational colleges, calling for a fair and prompt solution that ensures the adoption of a unified academic schedule for faculty members, similar to other government higher education institutions.
On a separate note, the Committee also reviewed proposed agenda items for the Education, Research and Innovation Committee’s work plan for the third annual session of the Tenth Term.
