Over 200 school items seized in Oman’s Suwaiq Wilayat for violating public morals

The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has confiscated 209 school-related items, including school bags, pencil cases, and water bottles, for containing images and symbols deemed offensive to religious values and public morals.

MUSCAT – The CPA’s Directorate General in North Al Batinah, represented by the Consumer Protection Office in the Wilayat of Suwaiq, conducted the inspection campaign targeting school supply markets in the Wilayat and seized items, which featured skull motifs and other inappropriate imagery.
“This constitutes a clear violation of the Consumer Protection Law and its Executive Regulation, and comes within the framework of the Authority’s efforts to monitor and follow up on violators,” the CPA stated.

Judicial control officers from the Authority led the campaign, which was part of ongoing efforts to monitor compliance and ensure consumer safety.

Authorities confirmed that the confiscated goods represent a clear violation of the Consumer Protection Law and its Executive Regulation. Article 26 of Executive Regulation No. 77/2017 stipulates the following: “It is prohibited to circulate goods that contain anything offensive to divine religions, or that display words, pictures, slogans, or symbols offensive to religious values, indecent, contrary to public morals, or customs. It is also prohibited to circulate goods in indecent forms or contrary to public morals.”

Accordingly, the violating shops were penalised and the seized goods were taken into custody.
It is worth noting that the Authority continues its inspection campaigns with the aim of providing safe markets for consumers, as part of its proactive plan to ensure markets remain safe and free of violations. This is particularly important given the increased demand for school supplies in preparation for the back-to-school season.

The Authority also urges consumers to report any violations through its various communication channels.
