MUSCAT — The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has announced a court ruling in favor of a consumer in North Al Sharqiyah, following a case of fraud involving a household furniture transaction advertised on social media.
According to the CPA, the consumer had entered into an agreement with the defendant, paying RO 1,975 as part of the purchase. However, the defendant issued a falsified invoice linked to a commercial establishment and failed to deliver the goods as promised. After switching off his phone and failing to respond, it was revealed that the defendant had no connection with the establishment in question.
The court convicted the defendant in absentia of fraud and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment, followed by permanent deportation from Oman after serving his term. The defendant was also fined RO 200 and ordered to refund the consumer. Additionally, he was held liable for the legal costs of the case.
