Muscat – The system, introduced on July 9, 2023, aims to regulate salary transfers in the country.
In a statement issued online the ministry stated that it is following up on private sector establishments’ implementation of the WPS. It released charts to highlight the number of large, medium, small and micro establishments not registered in WPS, as well as those establishments that have registered but have demonstrated non-compliance with wage transfers.
As per the statement, 18,6817 establishments are not registered under the Ministry’s WPS, including 3 large establishments, 475 medium, 14,164 small and 172,174 micro establishments.
A total of 57,735 establishments have registered with the WPS but have not transferred salaries through the system. These include 66 large establishments, 536 medium, 10,659 small and 46,137 micro establishments.
Between January 10 and August 20, 2024, the Ministry has issued 57,398 warnings to these entities to address their non-compliance.
The Ministry has been proactive in enforcing compliance, issuing warnings and reminders to non-compliant firms. This includes 186,817 SMS alerts sent between January 10 and May 16, 2024.
To support implementation, the Ministry has conducted awareness workshops in collaboration with industry partners. The WPS aims to safeguard workers’ rights by ensuring timely and secure wage payments.
It may be recalled that the ministry issued Resolution No. 299/2023 to implement the provisions of the WPS, which stipulates that the employer must update work contracts with the Ministry of Labour if/when there is a change in the workers’ wages
As per the Decision, the employer is obligated to transfer the workers’ wages to locally licensed banks within seven days from the date they are due, according to the unified description of the electronic wage protection system file.
