MUSCAT: The medical team led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Maskari, senior consultant cornea, cataract, and refractive surgeon at Oman International Hospital, successfully performed a Femtosecond laser-assisted anterior lamellar corneal transplant surgery on a 4-year-old boy. Following the surgery, the boy was discharged from the hospital with his parents were very happy with the results.
In the procedure, the latest model of the Femtosecond laser Femto LDV (manufactured by Swiss company Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems) was used to ensure a safe and efficient procedure. This technology is unique in its precise and gentle low-energy tissue separation. A built-in tomography device ensures full control for the doctor during surgery, such that only the diseased part of the cornea is removed, while the healthy tissue is spared. The surgery was performed in the presence of Dr. Fabian Mueller, a Swiss mathematician and clinical developer at Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems.
“We are pleased to be able to perform such a highly advanced form of corneal transplantation on our patients,” said Dr. Ahmed Al Maskari, Head of Oman Vision Centre. “Oman Vision Centre at Oman International Hospital has a state-of-the-art combination of cutting-edge technology, a comprehensive medical environment, and expertise to provide our patients with the great possible care. This type of surgery not only reduces the risks and complications associated with traditional and invasive forms of corneal transplantation, but it also makes the patient’s recovery more comfortable and faster. We can also perform corneal transplants with customized architecture, which provides greater biomechanical stability and potentially better visual outcomes, thanks to our femtosecond laser technology.”
