MUSCAT: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on Wednesday spoke to Lebanese President Michel Aoun and expressed Oman’s solidarity following a massive explosion that killed at least 100 people and wounded more than 4,000 in the capital, Beirut.

In a statement issued by the Oman News Agency (ONA) said His Majesty has expressed his deepest condolences to those died in the explosion and prayers to the injured.

The explosion released shockwaves through the city, flattening much of the port, damaging buildings and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky.

It’s still unclear what exactly caused the explosion, which appears to have been centered on the city’s port area. It was earlier blamed on a fire that broke out.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister said that an estimated 2,750 tons of the explosive ammonium nitrate had been stored at a warehouse in Beirut for six years.
