MUSCAT: The Najd area in the Wilayat of Thumrait is one of the most promising investment areas in the field of agricultural and livestock production.

The wilayat is ideal for agricultural and environmental conditions that enables effective contribution to enhance food security in the Sultanate of Oman. This can be achieved through land reclamation in this region and the rational and sustainable use of water resources using highly efficient smart farming methods. This will aid in producing multiple food and forage agricultural crops such as wheat, vegetables, fruits, date palms, alfalfa and grasses.

The Najd Company for Agricultural Development project is one of the most important investment projects. It is a closed joint stock company established in June 2010 with a capital of over OMR 12 million in Wadi Bani Khuwaiter, with a total area of 45,000 acres, in three phases.

In November of 2011, the first phase of the project was officially inaugurated in the Hanfeet area, and its actual production and marketing of its products began in April 2012.

During the first phase of the project, Al-Najd Company for Agricultural Development produced about 12,000 tons of fodder annually, in addition to increasing quantities of vegetables and wheat crops, with the sustainable expansion of the cultivated area.

The company took into account the sustainability of water and worked on continuous monitoring of water-level in wells. It also took care to plant seasonal crops and is determined according to the data obtained from the cultivated areas, varying from season to season and is distributed between fodder and vegetables.

Three years ago, the company started a research and development program for the purpose of supporting its activities to increase production efficiency. The cultivation of some oil crops is currently being evaluated to be planted on a target area of 2,600 acres if its feasibility is proven.

As for the second phase of the Al-Najd Company for Agricultural Development project, it will be in the Dokha area, after the completion of its studies, and it aims to cultivate at least three thousand feddans.
