Muscat: The symposium is being organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in partnership with Dhofar Municipality and Nama Dhofar Services. It is also being held in cooperation with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, UNESCO, and the Omani Water Society.

The event will highlight Oman’s experience in managing and sustaining water resources, while examining efforts to address the impact of climate change on surface water and groundwater.

Discussions will cover a wide range of challenges, including flood and drought risk management, salinity, protection of groundwater reserves and the rehabilitation and preservation of Oman’s traditional aflaj irrigation systems.

The symposium will also examine ways to diversify water sources through seawater desalination and the reuse of treated water, as well as measures to improve water-use efficiency in the agricultural sector.

A key focus will be the role of modern technology and innovation in water resource management. Experts will discuss the use of artificial intelligence, remote sensing, geographic information systems and hydrological modelling to improve planning, monitoring and decision-making.
