MUSCAT: Oman’s Ministry of Labour is working to review the minimum wage involving three parties, a top official has informed.
His Excellency Sheikh Nasser Al Hosni, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour said the Social Dialogue Committee under the Ministry has held the first meeting involving the government (Ministry of Labour), the General Federation of Workers and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) to review the minimum wage. “This issue (minimum wage) was discussed in the first meeting and it will be studied in the upcoming meetings to reach an agreement between the three parties,” Al Hosni informed.
Al Hosni pointed out that minimum wage issue needs to be tackled in the backdrop of certain factors, including inflation and economic parameters. “Oman is well recovering from the COVID-19 economic crisis and it will certainly help in accelerating the review of minimum wage for the workforce,” he said.

Al Hosni noted that the new workforce entering the labour market “be it Omani citizens or expatriates is a good indication that some sectors including the private health, education and construction are starting to show signs of recovery and growth,” he said.
“The bank lending is also a good indicator for the economy to recover,” he added.
