MUSCAT: A team from the Oman Human Rights Committee conducted a field visit to the detention department of the Royal Oman Police in Sohar. The aim behind the visit was to find out the humanitarian conditions of inmates and detainees and the services provided to them in accordance with the laws in force in the Sultanate of Oman.

During the visit, the team paid attention to the detailed explanation given by the Director of the Detention Department in Sohar. Information on the services provided to inmates and detainees, the health care and nutrition services for those suffering from chronic diseases was explained.

Then the committee team made a field tour inside the Detention Department, during which it inspected the various departments including visitors’ reception department and health clinic. They also learned about systems in place for organising visits to inmates’ families, communication channels provided for the detainees to stay in touch with their families and lawyers. They also checked the health care services provided to the the inmates and detainees by a specialised team.

The committee which made the visit was represented by a number of its members and employees. They were received by Colonel Saeed bin Muhammad Al-Jabri, Assistant Commander of North Al Batinah Police, Colonel Ali bin Hassan bin Saleh Al Balushi, Director General of Prisons, and Lt. Colonel Matar bin Hamad Al Makhmari, Director of Operations at the North Governorate Police Command. Al Batinah, and Lt. Col. Ali bin Marhoon Al Hashemi, Director of the Sohar Detention Department.
