MUSCAT: A total of 1,255 criminal cases were recorded in Oman in 2021, the country’s Assistant Public Prosecutor said on Monday.

Dr. Ahmed bin Saeed Al Shukaili said that the number of felonies received by the Public Prosecution in 2021 increased by 73 cases, at a rate of 6.2 percent, compared to 2020, where 1255 felonies were recorded in 2021, while in 2020, their number reached 1182.

The Public Prosecution dealt with 28,201 cases in 2021. Cases related to bank cheque emerged most frequently committed crime in the Sultanate. A total of 7,143 cheque cases were registered in 2021, followed by crimes of information technology and electronic transactions with 2,894 cases.

“The completion rate of the cases received by the Public Prosecution during the year 2021 amounted to 96% of the total cases,” he said.

“The independence of the judiciary, the quality of litigation and the speed of its procedures are the most important pillars that Oman Vision 2040 promotes as one of the global indicators for measuring competitiveness,” he added.
