MUSCAT : Anyone caught using a mobile phone while driving in Oman will now receive 10-days imprisonment and a fine of OMR 300 as punishment, the Public Prosecution (PP) said on Monday.

In a statement issued, PP said: “Using the hand to hold a mobile phone or any other electronic device while driving is an offence punishable by imprisonment for a period of 10 days and a fine that extends to OMR 300.”

Use of mobile phones is considered to be the leading cause of distraction among motorists who cause serious accidents. The Royal Oman Police have been repeatedly warning motorists against using their mobile phones while driving – for their safety and the safety of others.
