DOHA: Qatar has become the first Gulf state to apply a national minimum wage for expat workers that has been widely welcomed by people including the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The minimum wage law which came into force on Saturday is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of migrant workers in the tiny Gulf nation.

As per the new legislation, all employees will receive a minimum monthly wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals ($275), as well as a minimum of 300 riyals for food and 500 riyals for housing, unless the employer provides both.

According to ILO, more than 400,000 workers will get the benefit directly from the new legislation.
