Oman’s Ministry of Health has urged all citizens and residents travelling to Saudi Arabia from Oman to perform hajj pilgrimage this year to take vaccination against meningococcal meningitis and seasonal influenza (flu) before travelling.

The ministry has instructed that these vaccines should be taken not less than 10 days before travelling as it is considered a prerequisite by competent authorities in Saudi Arabia to enter and perform hajj.

The -vaccination provides immunity against meningococcal meningitis for a period of three years; seasonal influenza vaccine is given annually and it provides seasonal immunity against seasonal influenza diseases.

As such, the ministry has cautioned that those citizens who have been immunised against meningococcal meningitis for a period of not more than three years and those who have been vaccinated against seasonal influenza during Umrah in 2019 and have documentation need not be vaccinated again.

The ministry said that these vaccines are to be taken by those hajj pilgrims who have been accepted under the first electronic sorting announced by the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs (MARA). Citizens and residents can go to the nearest health institution in their governorate to take the vaccines.

Pilgrims are requested to adhere to the instructions in order to prevent transmission of the diseases and safeguard public health.
