Shura Council discusses Omanisation challenges in healthcare, shortage of rare specialties

The Shura Council’s Youth and Human Resources Committee has examined challenges to increasing Omani employment in healthcare, including shortages of qualified nationals in certain medical subspecialties and rare specialties.

MUSCAT – The committee held a meeting with His Excellency Sulaiman bin Nasser Al Hajri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Her Excellency Dr Fatima Mohammed Al Ajmi, CEO of the Oman Medical Specialty Board, and a number of specialists from the Ministry of Health.

The discussions covered the current state of human resources in the health sector, scholarship and continuous professional development programmes, and efforts to align health education and training outcomes with the sector’s needs.

The committee also examined differences in Omanisation rates between governorates, as well as challenges in attracting and retaining qualified Omani professionals in the health sector.

Members stressed the need for clear mechanisms to Omanize the largest possible number of health professions in Oman, while addressing financial challenges related to resources allocated to health professions and medical specialties.

The meeting also discussed efforts to attract branches of leading international medical universities and academic institutions specialising in health fields to Oman.
