MUSCAT: Oman’s Foreign Minister His Excellency Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi and his Iranian counterpart, His Excellency Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, have stressed the need to move beyond de-escalation towards sustainable understandings to ensure safe and uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The emphasis came during a telephone conversation between the two ministers, during which they reviewed the latest developments in communications and discussions aimed at reaching practical political and technical understandings to facilitate the resumption of unimpeded navigation through the strategic waterway.
Both ministers underscored the importance of moving from efforts to calm tensions towards establishing lasting understandings based on practical arrangements to ensure the safety of maritime routes and joint technical mechanisms to safeguard the flow of international trade and energy.
Such arrangements, they noted, would contribute to ending the state of war and preventing renewed confrontations in the region.
The ministers also stressed that any prospective understandings must respect state sovereignty, take into account the legitimate interests of all parties and create favourable conditions for restoring dialogue and negotiations to address the outstanding issues underlying the escalation.
They agreed to continue consultations and coordination and support diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening regional security and stability.
