MUSCAT : Work on the Muscat Expressway expansion is expected to begin in November at the latest, while authorities are studying changes to working hours at some institutions to ease traffic congestion during construction, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology His Excellency Engineer Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali said.
The minister said the project had been approved and awarded, and the contractor had received a notice to proceed.
Al Maawali said a plan to manage congestion during implementation would be submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval. Measures under consideration include traffic diversions and the scheduling of construction work to limit disruption to motorists.

The study could also include adjusting working hours at certain institutions to reduce traffic pressure, he said, stressing that it had not been completed and that details of the final arrangements remained premature.
The expansion, valued at more than RO157.2 million, covers the route from the Qurum Natural Park interchange to Halban and its connection with the Al Batinah Expressway, according to the Projects, Tenders and Local Content Authority.
