MUSCAT : Oman and 18 other Arab and Islamic countries on Friday condemned Colombia’s opening of an embassy in Jerusalem, urging Bogotá to reverse a decision they said violated United Nations resolutions and undermined prospects for peace.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers said the move weakened international efforts to achieve a just and lasting settlement based on a two-state solution.
Colombia inaugurated the embassy on Wednesday after President Abelardo de la Espriella restored diplomatic relations with Israel, reversing the rupture under his predecessor, Gustavo Petro, over the Gaza war.

The ministers said attempts to alter Jerusalem’s legal or historical status, or recognise it as Israel’s capital, had no legal effect. They cited Security Council resolutions 476 and 478, adopted in 1980, rejecting changes to the city’s status and calling for the withdrawal of diplomatic missions.
They urged Colombia to uphold its international obligations and reaffirmed Palestinian rights, including an independent, sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The signatories included Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan, Indonesia and Palestine.
