New York: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that the deteriorating security situation in northern Ethiopia is placing mounting pressure on humanitarian operations at a time when needs are continuing to rise.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said humanitarian access has been severely restricted by disrupted telecommunications, the suspension of flights to and from the Tigray region, and restrictions affecting key roads and locations in Amhara.

The disruptions have limited the movement of humanitarian workers, relief supplies and civilians, making it increasingly difficult for aid agencies to reach people in need.

The UN also said humanitarian operations were already under significant pressure due to funding shortages. Several partners have scaled back or suspended activities, leaving fewer humanitarian organisations operating on the ground as humanitarian requirements increase.

Despite the challenges, UN humanitarian partners continue to monitor developments, conduct rapid assessments and strengthen preparedness and contingency measures to ensure assistance can continue wherever access remains possible.

The UN Secretary-General has separately expressed grave concern over the rapidly deteriorating situation in northern Ethiopia, including intensified fighting in and around Tigray and the spread of hostilities into neighbouring areas. He called on all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa is engaging with national and regional stakeholders and coordinating closely with partners including the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in efforts to support de-escalation and dialogue.
