MUSCAT: The Embassy of Nepal in Muscat paid tribute to late Omani mountaineer Nadhira Al Harthy, the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest, during a memorial ceremony held at Nepal House on August 31.

The ceremony was organised in memory of the 10 mountaineers who lost their lives in the Broad Peak avalanche on July 30, 2026, as well as victims of the flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26.

Bushra Al Ajmi, Acting Chief of the Asia-Pacific Department at Oman’s Foreign Ministry, attended the ceremony alongside ambassadors, diplomats, Omani Everest climber Sulaiman Al Naabi, members of Al Harthy’s family, representatives of the Oman-Nepal Friendship Association, members of the Nepali community and other guests.

Bishesh Kumar Sah, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Nepal, recalled Al Harthy’s achievements and her close association with Nepal and the embassy.

Al Harthy made history in 2019 when she became the first Omani woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, establishing herself as one of the Sultanate’s most prominent mountaineers.

Sah also paid tribute to renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and the other climbers who lost their lives in the Broad Peak avalanche.

The Nepalese diplomat also expressed condolences over the deaths and destruction caused by the August 26 flash floods in Nepal and highlighted ongoing search, rescue and relief operations.

Al Ajmi conveyed her condolences to the families of those who died and praised the Nepal Embassy for organising the memorial to honour the victims.

Participants observed a minute of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the two tragedies. The embassy thanked attendees for standing in solidarity with the bereaved families and the people of Nepal and Oman.
