MUSCAT : Oman’s Environment Authority said an oil spill has affected about 12 kilometres of coastline in the Ras Madrakah area, as authorities continue monitoring and field response operations to contain the pollution.

The authority said the latest field assessments showed that teams were dealing with the affected beaches on the ground, while no signs of oil pollution had so far been detected at other monitored locations.

Monitoring results also showed no evidence, as of the latest assessment, that pollution from the spill had reached the coast of Masirah Island, whose southern section lies within the area considered potentially at risk.

The Environment Authority said surveillance data and updated modelling indicated that the oil slick at sea was continuing to move along its observed path towards the southeast of Masirah Governorate.

Authorities are continuing to track its movement in line with changing marine and weather conditions.

The Environment Authority said monitoring, surveillance and response operations would continue as teams assess the extent of the pollution and take measures to deal with affected coastal areas.
