MUSCAT : In an educational bulletin, the ministry highlighted the importance of seasonal influenza vaccination, particularly as influenza activity in Oman typically begins around September and can continue through mid-May. The ministry also encouraged the public to review health guidance and take precautions to reduce the spread of infection.

The seasonal influenza vaccine is particularly recommended for adults aged 60 and above, people with chronic conditions including heart, liver, kidney and neurological diseases and uncontrolled diabetes, pregnant women, healthcare workers and young children, including those under 24 months.

The ministry said mild cases of influenza can generally be managed at home with adequate fluid intake, sufficient rest and fever-reducing medication such as paracetamol. People with influenza should also avoid close contact with others to reduce the risk of transmission.

The ministry stressed that paracetamol should be taken according to the recommended dosage and intervals stated on the product packaging or advised by a healthcare professional. Users should not exceed the maximum daily dose or take the medicine unless necessary. Dosage requirements can vary according to factors including age and weight, making it important to consult the medication leaflet or a healthcare professional.

The bulletin also provides guidance on ibuprofen, including Brufen, which has pain-relieving, fever-reducing and anti-inflammatory effects. It can be used for conditions including arthritis, toothache, cold and flu symptoms, post-surgical pain and fever.

The ministry advised people to verify the appropriate dosage of ibuprofen for adults and children with a healthcare provider or through the product instructions. It also cautioned against taking the medicine on an empty stomach and highlighted precautions for people with asthma, stomach irritation or ulcers, G6PD deficiency, impaired kidney or liver function, and infants under one year of age.

Alongside vaccination, the ministry recommends regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected people as key measures to help reduce influenza transmission.
