MUSCAT – In a road safety awareness message, the ROP highlighted four key behaviours that place drivers and other road users at risk: excessive speeding, mobile phone use while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and not maintaining a safe following distance.
The police warned against accelerating to beat traffic lights before they turn red, advising motorists instead to prepare to stop calmly and safely. It also cautioned that even a few seconds of using a mobile phone while driving can have devastating consequences, as brief distractions are enough to cause serious crashes.
The ROP further reminded drivers that relying on hand grips or physical strength during sudden braking is no substitute for wearing a seatbelt. Proper seatbelt use, it said, helps stabilise occupants and significantly reduces the risk of injury in the event of a collision.

Motorists were also advised to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, allowing sufficient time to react to unexpected hazards and helping to protect both themselves and other road users.
Concluding its message, the Royal Oman Police emphasised that every decision made on the road matters, urging drivers to act responsibly and recognise that a single safe choice today could save a life.
