GENEVA – The agreement was signed by His Excellency Mahmoud bin Hamad Al Hasani, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Swiss Confederation, and by Professor Mark Thomson, Director-General of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.
The agreement establishes a framework for joint cooperation in the field of high-energy physics, including the exchange of scientific personnel, knowledge and equipment. It also opens the way for Omani scientists, engineers and students to join the organisation’s research and training programmes in experimental and theoretical physics, accelerator engineering, computing, artificial intelligence, information security and advanced materials science.

His Excellency Al Hasani affirmed that this partnership reflects a clear direction under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik towards building a knowledge-based economy. He noted that the agreement opens new avenues of cooperation for Omani professionals with one of the world’s most prestigious research centres.
The agreement is valid for five years and is automatically renewable. It also establishes a mechanism for concluding detailed protocols with scientific and university institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, enabling cooperation to be translated into tangible and measurable research projects.
CERN is one of the world’s leading scientific research centres. It has 23 member states, while many other countries cooperate with the organisation under similar agreements.
