Oman, India celebrate ancient maritime bonds at UN event

Oman and the Republic of India jointly highlighted their centuries-old maritime relationship during a special event at the United Nations in New York titled “Ancient Trade Routes: The Journey of the Kaundinya.”

New York: The event showcased the voyage of the Indian Navy sailing ship “Kaundinya,” which sailed from Porbandar Port in Gujarat on December 29, 2025, and arrived at Sultan Qaboos Port in Muttrah on January 14, 2026.

His Excellency Ambassador Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, said the voyage of the “Kaundinya” revives the deep-rooted ties between Oman and India that have flourished across the Indian Ocean for centuries. He noted that the ship’s visit to Oman stands as a living testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations.

His Excellency Al Kathiri also highlighted the historical maritime partnership between Oman and India, emphasizing the important role played by ports such as Muscat, Sur and Mumbai in facilitating trade, cultural exchange and civilizational connectivity across the world.

He added that the spirit of cooperation between the two countries continues to inspire joint efforts in marine resource management, biodiversity preservation and sustainable ocean practices. Oman and India, he said, have demonstrated leadership in promoting responsible fishing, combating marine pollution and advancing scientific research through dialogue and exchange of expertise.

The event also featured remarks from India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who said the journey of the “Kaundinya” reflects the longstanding maritime traditions linking India with Oman and other Gulf countries, strengthening historical and cultural relations across the region.

The National Museum of Oman participated with a special video presentation showcasing the historical and civilizational ties between Oman and India through the ages, underlining the rich cultural heritage shared by both nations.

Ambassador Dr. Adnan bin Rashid Al-Azri, Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman for the Continental Shelf and Maritime Affairs, spoke about ongoing joint projects between the two countries in marine science, aquatic environment studies and water management.

The event also witnessed participation and interaction from delegations representing Indian Ocean and European countries. Meanwhile, a delegation from the Indian Navy and the crew of the “Kaundinya” highlighted the restoration process of the ship and the extensive training undertaken ahead of the voyage, while expressing appreciation for the warm reception they received in Oman.
