MUSCAT : Community awareness plays a crucial role in confronting rumours and misleading information, particularly during times of crises and regional tensions when the spread of inaccurate news tends to increase, experts said.

Specialists told the Oman News Agency that the rapid flow of information through social media platforms has made societies more vulnerable to the circulation of unverified reports. They stressed that strengthening social awareness and responsible communication is essential to curb misinformation and protect public confidence.

They emphasised that both citizens and residents share a collective responsibility in addressing rumours by seeking information from official sources and avoiding the circulation of unverified claims.

Experts noted that verifying information before sharing it helps limit the impact of misleading reports and reinforces trust in official communication channels.

Dr Ahmed bin Ali Al Shaibi said that words carry a moral and intellectual responsibility, and are not merely passing expressions or momentary reactions.

“What is more dangerous during times of crisis is not only the intensity of events themselves, but the noise of misinformation that may confuse minds and distort reality,” he said.

He added that rumours are not simply mistakes in sharing news but actions that can undermine public awareness and weaken trust within society.

According to the experts, communities that allow the spread of unreliable information gradually create an environment where public opinion can be easily manipulated and social cohesion weakened.

They also pointed out that societal awareness acts as the first line of defence against misinformation, beginning with individuals recognising their ethical and legal responsibilities when sharing content online.

Digital platforms, they said, should be seen as spaces for responsible testimony and documentation rather than channels for impulsive expression or entertainment.

Experts further highlighted that verifying information before publishing it is a core value in Islamic teachings, citing the Quranic principle: “Verify the information,” which emphasises the importance of confirming facts and consulting trusted sources.

Adhering to this approach, they said, helps protect society from the harmful effects of media manipulation and rumours, while enabling individuals to distinguish between truth and falsehood particularly in an era of overwhelming information flows across social media platforms.
