NEW DELHI: The Indian government has approved a proposal to rename the southern state of Kerala as “Keralam,” taking forward a request made by the state assembly to align the official name with its Malayalam usage.
The decision was cleared by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following resolutions passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly seeking the change. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had urged the Centre to amend the Constitution to reflect “Keralam,” the name used in the state’s official language.
Under Article 3 of the Constitution, the President will refer the proposed Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the state legislature for its views. The federal government will then introduce the bill in Parliament for consideration and approval.
