SEOUL : Following a telephone conversation between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the two ministers agreed to maintain close communication and cooperation in addressing the North Korean nuclear issue while maintaining a strong combined defence posture.

During the call, Cho said Seoul would work to ensure that recent signals from US President Donald Trump could contribute to the resumption of dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang and help advance peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The discussions also covered key economic and security issues between the two allies.

According to the ministry, Cho and Rubio agreed to work towards mutually beneficial outcomes on outstanding matters including tariffs, investment agreements, shipbuilding and security cooperation, as part of efforts to further strengthen South Korea-US relations.

The two ministers also stressed that close coordination between Seoul and Washington remains particularly important amid changing regional and international conditions.
