New York: UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo told the Security Council on Monday that fighting was raging on multiple fronts, particularly in North Kordofan, West Darfur, North Darfur and Blue Nile.

She said recent hostilities have been marked by the heavy use of drones alongside ground fighting, while renewed clashes near Sudan’s borders have increased concerns that the conflict could spread further across the region.

The humanitarian toll continues to mount, with around 13 million people forced to flee their homes, including approximately 8.7 million internally displaced people across Sudan’s 18 states.

DiCarlo said the UN human rights office had documented around 1,400 civilian deaths between January and June 2026, with approximately 1,100 of those killed in drone strikes, underscoring the increasingly lethal role of unmanned weapons in the conflict.

Recalling her previous Security Council briefing in June, DiCarlo said conditions had deteriorated further since then.

“Since then, the conflict has continued to escalate. The suffering has increased,” she said, warning that the consequences of the war would be long-lasting.

The UN has repeatedly warned that escalating hostilities are worsening an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with millions facing displacement, food insecurity and severely restricted access to essential services.

On efforts to bring an end to the conflict, DiCarlo said the United Nations continues to support initiatives aimed at securing a humanitarian truce and creating conditions for a political settlement.

She also highlighted continued coordination with regional and international partners, including the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States and the European Union, in efforts to advance a viable political path for Sudan.
