MUSCAT – The Oman Society of Astronomy and Space (OSAS) has published the first comprehensive research paper dedicated to the astronomical tourism sector.
Published in the International Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the study titled ‘Astronomical Tourism in the Sultanate of Oman’ provides a strategic roadmap for leveraging Oman’s pristine dark skies to drive economic diversification under Oman Vision 2040.
The research, authored by Ishaq Yahya Khalhfan Alshuaili and Ali Amur Qais AlShibani from OSAS, examines the current status of astronomical tourism in Oman, highlighting the country’s geographical and environmental advantages, its rich astronomical heritage, and opportunities for sustainable development. It also explores potential projects such as world-class observatories and sky-based tourism initiatives under Oman’s dark skies.
The paper notes that Oman’s diverse landscapes – from deserts to high mountain plateaus – and low light pollution levels in regions such as Jabal Shams, Al Jebel Al Akhdar, Rub’ al Khali, and southern governorates provide ideal conditions for stargazing and night-time tourism. The arid climate allows for cloudless nights across much of the year, supporting year-round astronomical activities.
The study concludes that astro-tourism can play a significant role in Oman’s tourism sector and economy if dark-sky sites are sustainably protected and integrated into the tourism framework. It recommends establishing radio astronomy observatories in Al Wusta and Dhofar, and developing astronomy-themed resorts in Oman’s mountainous regions, aligning with the goals of Oman Vision 2040 to diversify the economy and build a knowledge-based tourism sector.
