MUSCAT : Muscat Municipality has begun construction of an 8.08-kilometre dual carriageway linking Al Nuzha Street in Al Maabela to the Muscat Expressway, as it expands the capital’s road network to keep pace with urban growth.
The project is expected to be completed and opened to traffic in mid-2028, project manager Sami bin Salim Al Rahbi told the Oman News Agency.
It includes additional lanes at junctions to increase capacity and 3.75 kilometres of single-carriageway service roads to improve access to nearby facilities, developments and residential neighbourhoods.

Four junctions will be equipped with smart traffic signals to improve traffic management, reduce congestion and strengthen road safety, Al Rahbi said.
The works also include a rainwater drainage network comprising channels, multi-cell box culverts and roadside drainage systems to limit surface water accumulation and improve the road’s resilience during rainfall.
Energy-efficient LED street lighting will be installed to improve visibility at night and support the municipality’s energy-efficiency goals.
