MUSCAT : This follows the success of the first cell, which was commissioned in 2017 and holds 2,345,910 cubic meters.
The expansion comes in response to the increasing demand for waste disposal services in the governorate, particularly during high-activity seasons such as the Dhofar Khareef.
The company is also currently building an integrated plant to treat leachate generated from decomposing waste at the landfill. The treated water will be used to irrigate non-edible plants, among other uses that contribute to achieving efficiency and sustainable operation, reducing environmental impact and protecting natural resources.
Eng. Mohsen bin Mohammed Al Barwani, Director General of Planning and Service Improvement for the Municipal Solid Waste Sector, said: “The Thumrait landfill represents an effective model for managing waste in a scientifically sustainable manner, while adhering to global best practices to reduce emissions and maximize the use of available resources.”
He added that be’ah remains committed to innovation in the waste management sector, strengthening collaboration with government entities and communities, and continuously developing infrastructure that supports Oman’s long-term environmental goals.
During the Khareef season, the Thumrait landfill experiences a surge in activity, receiving approximately 74 waste trucks daily, totalling around 1,200 tons of waste per day. This is a notable increase from the 58 trucks and 850 tons received on average during the rest of the year.
It is worth noting that all waste reception and processing activities at the landfill are conducted through advanced, precisely engineered systems that include weighing, unloading, and preliminary treatment.
These systems operate within advanced engineering cells designed and implemented according to the highest international specifications, ensuring environmental safety and protecting society.
