MUSCAT – “Beyond detecting standard violations, the AI system is designed to track repeated traffic violations linked to specific vehicles and drivers, including those in the delivery sector,” the ROP stated, in reply to a query on how AI cameras will be utilised to identify and address unruly drivers.
While the smart surveillance system is already known for detecting violations such as speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt non-compliance, the ROP confirmed that the AI technology is also being used to track repeat offences linked to specific vehicles and drivers, allowing for deeper behavioural insights and more targeted enforcement.
“This enables authorities to identify patterns of non-compliance and target educational, corrective, or enforcement measures where necessary,” the ROP explained, adding that the system will help address behaviours like sudden lane changes, ignoring traffic signals, or reckless manoeuvres, which are often observed among some particular drivers.
By identifying these persistent violators, the ROP aims to ensure safer roads for all users while holding frequent offenders accountable for their actions.
