“The phenomenon of the sun being directly overhead the Kaaba occurs twice a year and serves as a perfect opportunity to accurately determine the direction of the Qibla. This can be done by placing a vertical object (such as a straight stick) upright on a flat surface at the exact time of the alignment; at that moment, the shadow cast by the object will point in the exact opposite direction of the Qibla,” states the announcement from OSAS.
