MUSCAT : The rollout follows a similar launch in Lebanon, expanding Google’s presence in the Middle East mobile payments space.

The tech giant confirmed that Google Pay allows individuals to conduct secure purchases wherever contactless payments are accepted. Cardholders can seamlessly store their credit or debit cards within the Google Wallet app. A key security feature highlighted by Google is the use of a device-specific virtual card number, or token, paired with a dynamic security code that changes with each transaction, offering multiple layers of protection for every payment.

In Oman, users will primarily utilise Google Pay for purchases through supported websites and mobile applications. However, certain functionalities, such as sending money to friends or paying for specific services, are currently not supported within the Sultanate. As of now, Sohar International Bank is the first and only bank to enable Google Pay for its customers, extending this service to its international debit, credit, and prepaid cardholders. To activate the service, customers simply need to add their card details to the Google Wallet application on their Android 9 or higher devices.

The launch follows a series of digital payment milestones in the country, including the introduction of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay in 2024. These advancements are in line with the Central Bank of Oman’s broader strategy to promote a cashless economy through innovations like mobile wallets, QR code systems, and advanced card tokenization.
