Muscat: In his address, His Excellency Mahmoud bin Yahya Al Dhahli, Governor of North Al Sharqiyah, highlighted the festival as a success story of integration between government and community efforts. He noted that the inaugural edition in 2023 helped increase the cultivated grape area in the governorate from 8 acres to 27 acres—reflecting a 238 percent growth rate.

His Excellency pointed out that the governorate is building on this momentum by launching the Model Grape Farms Project in this year’s edition. The initiative aims to cultivate an additional 100 acres, raising the total to 127 acres, with an expected annual production of 635 tons and an economic return exceeding RO 1 million. The project also introduces six new international grape varieties that are high in quality, and more suitable for storage and transport, to boost competitiveness in both local and international markets.

The festival’s opening included a documentary on the development of grape cultivation in the Sultanate of Oman, and a scientific paper presented by Dr. Rashid Al Yahyaei, Dean of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University. His presentation addressed the role of biotechnology and research in agricultural advancement, emphasising the need for strong partnerships between farmers and academic institutions.

Local farmers shared their successful grape-growing experiences, including modern irrigation techniques, organic fertilization, and localized marketing strategies. Several investment agreements supporting grape farming and food processing were also highlighted.

At the conclusion of the opening day, His Excellency the Minister honoured contributors, participants, and farmers, and officially inaugurated the accompanying exhibition. The exhibition features pavilions showcasing grape varieties, processed grape products, and modern agricultural equipment, with active participation from both public and private sector stakeholders.

The festival continues tomorrow with the launch of the Accompanying Agricultural Laboratory, which will focus on identifying agricultural challenges and advancing investment in the sector within North Al Sharqiyah. Experts and representatives from various relevant authorities are set to participate.

Organised jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate Office, with support from both government and private institutions, the Grape Festival serves as a comprehensive platform for empowering farmers, promoting innovation, and positioning North Al Sharqiyah as a promising agricultural hub in Oman.

The event aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, aiming to boost food security and stimulate high-quality agricultural investment.

The opening ceremony was attended by esteemed members of the State Council, senior government officials, private sector representatives, farmers, entrepreneurs, and agricultural stakeholders.
